Plan An Author Visit

9 Helpful Tips to Prepare
For a Successful Author Visit

1. Share my books with teachers, librarians and students in a variety of setting in the weeks prior to the visit. Read "a poem a day" over the loud speaker at morning announcements!
2. After researching my Web site, have the students write additional questions they would like me to answer.

 • What To Expect From a Visit

 • Book Ordering Information

 • Download Bookmark Poems

3. Plan projects or activities centered on my books. Encourage students to create their own poems/stories/books.
4. At least three weeks before the visit, please send me directions, accommodations, etc., and a schedule of the day's events.
5. Place book orders with publishers or local book sellers at least 4-6 weeks before the visit.

6. Plan a community event immediately following the school day or in the evening for the benefit of parents and younger children. This is a great time for book signing!
7. Have a "Meet-the-Author" breakfast with your staff on the day of the event.
8. Take school pictures during the visit so that, if appropriate, I can put them here on my Web site. (I also like to collect an X-large T-shirt with the school's logo on it to wear on the day of the visit. I have over 400 school T-shirts!)
9. Expect to have fun and an enriching learning experience!
